Our History
Charley MacMartin began Queen City Soil & Stone in 2005 to continue the stone and soil work he had done in Baltimore, Maryland, before moving back to Vermont with his family.A 1988 UVM graduate, Charley's background in environmental studies and his experience working for a Vermont organic grower, David Miskell, guide the ecological practices Charley brings to soil and stone work.
Additionally, his work with housing, food and preschool cooperatives in Maryland and Vermont reflects his values of collaboration and mutual aid.
“Charley’s high motivation and pride in his work are reflected in his creation of unique and quality landscaping. I appreciate his artistry, dependability and,
most of all, his fun and friendly
personality. His work sites are alive with passion and care for the natural environment and the people and plants that share it."

Our services
Queen City Soil & Stone is committed to practices and principles that view a garden as part of the broader ecology.
Soil health work
Our soil services include creating new beds, improving existing beds and setting up composting systems. Each of these services has the same goal: establishing a healthy soil home.Read more: Soil Services
Stone work
Our stone projects are dry-built. We use no mortar and instead depend on the techniques and standards learned through Britain’s Dry Stone Walling Association. We integrate each wall, patio and walkway into the overall vision for the garden.Read more: Stone Work
