Introductory Stone Wall Workshops

Our introductory workshops for homeowners and tradespeople promote the beauty and integrity of stone. The one-day workshops focus on the basic techniques for creating dry-laid garden retaining walls and free-standing walls using field stone and rounded cobbles. The one-day workshops are hands-on — working directly with stone native to Vermont.

"The stone wall workshop
awoke a new passion and
appreciation for stone.
In just one day-long class,
we were equipped with the
enthusiasm and skills to build
four beautiful stone walls
with gathered materials
from our property.”

Cynthia Cole and Fred Erdman,
Richmond

Community Workshops

Each year, we work with community groups to organize stone wall building
workshops for permanent stone creations. We share the basic principles
for stone wall building, and bring attention to the excellent work these
groups and organizations do in Vermont.

“Charley MacMartin and Allison Lea were instrumental in the success of our first stone wall building workshop for the Rosie’s Girls Summer Program. They were a pleasure to work with and the girls had a blast!"

Kelly Walsh, Program Coordinator, Vermont Works for Women

"Charley MacMartin is not only a skilled stone artisan,
but he's also a patient, caring, and inspiring
educator. With Charley's guidance, students at the
Community Teaching Garden at Ethan Allen
Homestead had a fun and meaningful experience
building a circular stone table which turned
out beautifully, and is a lasting symbol of community."
